Rant: There is no such thing as a perfect lens for Street Photography

I don’t know if it’s a trend to write about “the best lens…” right now, but for some reason my RSS feed is filled with them. There’s no such thing as the best lens for street photography, or any photography for that matter. There “IS” such a thing as the best lens for “YOU“. And only YOU can figure out what focal length speaks to the type of work you’re trying to create.

A lot of street photographers will say that 28mm or 35mm is the best. They are the most common, yes, but that doesn’t make them ideal. For a long time I used a 28mm and I do enjoy it but ever since I started using the 18mm nothing, to me, compares to the look I get.

18mm is my choice as the best lens for street photography. For me. That doesn’t mean it’s right for you. So stop listening to those click bate articles, and go out and experiment. Find the right lens for you.
